yuck!

For Christmas the boys got these beautiful sweaters from Amma and Baba (not these sweaters) and they decided they weren't cool enough for them. I just loved them, but they didn't. So today, we went to Zellers and they picked out these bunny hugs. Size 18. "mom, they're cooler if they're baggy". Kaedo looks like he is swimming in his, but Sterling's fits quite well. They are the ugliest things I have ever got for them, but I guess if they love them, that's what matters.
So, thanks, Amma and Baba, for the god awful bunny hugs.

back to life

...our new life, that is. The one where mom leaves home for work everyday. Back to work this afternoon. Looking forward to it. Love to learn.
Craig is at work and the boys are out swimming with friends. A good day being had by all. Craig is the only Sr. Mgr on his floor(?) this week so he has it pretty casual. I think he was happy to be getting back into the routine today. Although, if the routine started at9am instead of 5:40am, I think he would be even happier.
The weather is great, although a little windy.
Sent an email to my mom this morning - here is an excerpt. Had to pass along the webkinz story but didn't want to re-write it. Enjoy. Out of the mouths of babes:

We had a great weekend. Jessica and Ken gave us a GC to the movies and we had some free passes so we headed there yesterday, then ran some errands and took the boys to the flea market. They were thrilled when they were able to purchase webkinz for $5 less than in the stores. They pooled their money and bought 2 for $20 and spent most of the afternoon and evening playing on the computers doing all the fun stuff the webkinz program allows you to do. Kaedo is very proficient with Webkinz (he has 30 of them, after all) so he spent quite a while helping Sterling get his "room" set up and they sent lots of gifts to each other, etc.
Emilee and Lucas came to play. Their mom told them they could stay for 30 minutes (I didn't know that) and two hours later their dad rang the bell for them to come home.
I was on the main floor reading a book and listening to them play. They had brought a bunch of webkinz with them. They were putting on a dance with Sterling's iPod being the dj. I heard Emilee say "there will be lots of kissing" and Kaedo replied, "ya, tons of lip action". I almost peed my pants. I had to interrupt Craig's football game (Go Miami) to tell him. It was hilarious.

Happy Monday, everyone!

As you can see, they received lots of wonderful gifts. No pictures of the scooters from Stan and Shirley but will take some video once they get them outside. Got a confirmation from the ski hill and lessons start on Jan 11. The boys were thrilled with their snowboarding lessons from Amma and Baba. Many more thank yous to come. The boys will do that personally.
Hope your Christmas was as great as ours. Not as many pictures of Sterling - sorry about that. Kaedo is more than willing to have his picture taken - Sterling - not so much!
400 posts - can you believe it???

Worth Everything...

Hi All -
so many pictures of happy, smiling boys unwrapping their many gifts from all of you. I will do a longer post today or tomorrow with all the pictures, but thought I would post this video.
This is what it is all about. Today we are the heroes!
Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve

Hello All -
Can you believe it is here??? I have just gotten home from work - where I took my first call (gasp)!
The boys have been working on Craig's last nerve today - they are so excited - so I am quickly posting this and am then going to relieve him for a while. There must be football on somewhere. Maybe he can veg for 30 minutes. He is going to be the one staying up tonight, as I have only had about 3.5 hours of sleep and am exhausted. Worked last night until 10:40pm then it took 2 hours to get home in the storm. By the time I got to bed it was after 2:30am and I was out the door this morning at 6:30. Now I have four days off and I plan to watch movies with the boys, hang out, play in the snow, see a couple of shows, sleep in and read. Hopefully I will have a chance to do it all.
To everyone one who takes the time to check in here and see what we are up to, I wish you a Merry Christmas. From our family to yours, we wish you all the best and know that we will be talking to many of you in the days to come. Be safe, have fun, and be jealous of the lovely popcorn supper my kids will be having at the movies tomorrow night. Turkey? What turkey?

lovin' it!

So - it is 12:15am, and I got home from work about 30 minutes ago and I am pumped and wired and not tired at all. I am loving my new job. I am still in the training phase, and starting work at 4pm is sometimes hard, but it is awesome. I love to learn. I love to be in the classroom, and I am loving being with all these people. The class is very culturally diverse with people from Greece, Sri Lanka, Grenada, Iran, Africa, all over. There have been some pretty intense conversations in the downtime about different cultures, etc, but I have stayed away from that. On my break I take time to read and eat and call the fam.
Craig and the boys are doing awesome. I think things maybe run smoother when I am not home. hmmm.
Anyway - just wanted to check in and tell you all (all 6 of you) that everything is great here. Life is good. It's been a long while since I've said that!
While I am at it, I'll brag that I wrote two tests today and scored a respectable 96% and 88%. Not too shabby for someone who hasn't been in a classroom for 11 years. I guess I have been listening to Craig all those times he has talked to me about the bank. I know I've said it before - but it's true!

A Christmasy Weekend

The boys in front of the tree - terrible lighting - sorry about that!
Our angel - Sterling made it in daycare and we have always used it. I love it.

Kaedo putting up an ornament - nice hair, man!

Sterling adding an ornament. Nice hair, man!

More ornament hanging

Shaking the box for our Secret Santa

Self-explanatory. Every year we draw names and add a dollar value to our Secret Santa. We have decided on $5 this year (everyone uses their own money). Next weekend we will all go out and buy something for whoever we got, will wrap it, and open them on Christmas Eve.
Some of our Christmas snacks
The Christmas Season has officially started for us! We had a wonderful weekend together, and I spent tons of time hanging out with the boys. It was great. I guess being away all week makes me crave tons of time with them. I did some Christmas shopping early on Saturday morning, then went to Kaedo's soccer game and watched a movie. Today I slept in - really slept in - it was awesome! I went out and picked up some snacks for our tree decorating party, downloaded some Christmas songs to my ipod and we set out to decorate the tree. It was fun. We have so many old ornaments and I think of their history as soon I hold them. Craig and I both checked last year's pictures to see who had put the angel on the tree, and this was Kaedo's year. Poor Craig - he spent yesterday helping a friend move and was aching today. He had to lift Kaedo up to place the angel and while he didn't groan out loud I know he was aching.
Back to work for everyone tomorrow. A short week for Craig, as he starts his holidays on Thursday. The boy's last day is Friday and I work right up until 11pm on Christmas Eve. Oh well, such is life.
I am looking forward to the next few weeks. Craig and I are having breakfast together on Friday morning and they we are off to buy a special present for each of the boys. They will be thrilled. Saturday is Craig's 36th birthday. I keep asking him what he would like/would like to do, but he doesn't have any answers. Can you give coal for birthdays? Sunday we are having our dear friends, the Backyardigans, over for supper. Now I have to decide what to make. Looking forward to more celebrating and enjoying the season. Would love to hear what your plans are.

where there's smoke there's fire - A Public Service Announcement

So, last night, Craig tried to burn the house down. He was making supper. May I just say that I did put out what to have for supper but he decided to go in another direction as far as the food went and this is what happened. That should be a lesson - when I tell you to have rice - HAVE RICE!
He was making some soup for Sterling (sore teeth - no chewing), and was talking to Kaedo and the sleeve of his sweatshirt was on the coil of the stove and it caught on fire. Kaedo says he yelled "oh Crap!", but I tend to think the language may have been a little more colorful. Apparently he pulled the sweatshirt off and Kaedo swiped at it with a towel until the flames went out. Yes, his sleeve was flaming. Man, how I wish I had a picture of that. Aah well, such is life.

Needless to say (but I will anyway) he burned the top of one hand and the arm of the other, burning off the hair on part of his arm. The one thing Sterling said to me this morning was, "it's a good thing he wasn't wearing a soccer jersey or the material would have melted to his skin". Very scary.

Anyway - that's what happens when I am not home to supervise. Next week he'll probably cut his finger off, pass out, and Kaedo will have to sew it back on with some embroidery floss.

Shirley - you can breathe again now.

sicko

Have a sick one at home today. Poor guy. Had his braces tightened on Tuesday and today has such a headache he is in bed. Sterling went to school this morning and by 10am was calling to come home. Unfortunately he didn't have them call home, just my cell and Craig's work and cell. I was home all morning but didn't have my cell phone on me, and Craig was in meetings and didn't get the messages. Craig called me about 1:15pm telling me about all the calls and so I checked our phone and sure enough no one had called home. I quickly phoned the school and let them know that I would be there right away to pick up Sterling. I mentioned at the office that no one called the house and Sterling said, "I thought you were working today". We just need to get some of those things ironed out, so they know who to call and when. I am glad that Craig phoned me, so I could get him home. Better late than never!
The job is good and I am enjoying the classroom setting and getting to know other people. I'm amazed at how much I already know about the bank. I guess I have been listening when Craig has talked about it! It makes for a late night, but that's OK. It's all worth it.
Hope everyone is well. Will take some pix this weekend and post them here. We are going to decorate the tree and have a little party the four of us. Should be fun.

pillow mail

Got this lovely piece of mail left on my pillow last night. Sigh. This is the most wonderful letter I have ever received. He just knows what to say. Lovely. Love him.

Monday 8 December 2008

take a deep breath and grab a drink...this is a long one!

Man - where has the time gone? Sorry for not blogging - so much has been happening. As most of you know, my company was restructured 12 days ago, leaving me not completely out of a job, but certainly with way fewer hours. Not enough to keep my life the way I want it. So, I had to find another job. One that would make it possible to continue working for my company (which I love) but bring in a steady income. Craig and I worked on getting a resume built for me - something I hadn't needed in almost 10 years - and I diligently scoured the help wanted ads in the newspapers and online.

Last Tuesday night at supper, Craig mentioned that a woman who used to work for him had gone on to be a Director in the Scotiabank Call Centre, and he wondered if I would be OK with him checking into some possible job opportunities there. Even after a few days of looking, I was discouraged, so I told him to go for it. And he did. The next few days were a whirlwind. His contact walked my resume down to Human Resources (thanks Viv!) (thanks Craig!) and within an hour I received a call requesting a phone interview. That was scheduled for Thursday morning.
At the end of that interview, I was happily informed that I was successful in making it to the 2nd round of interviewing. Great! I thought - what's next? Turns out it was 2 hours in front of computer doing a myriad of tests that totally freaked me out. Everything happened so quickly! Friday morning 8am, found me in Scarborough, taking all these crazy tests. When I finally finished, my confidence was so wobbly, I just didn't think I would make it. To top it all off, when I finished the test, the coordinator told me that she couldn't give me the results right away, and that she would have to call me and let me know if I was to proceed to the NEXT round of interviewing. I returned home and spent the next two hours watching a movie with the boys and making Christmas ornaments (PA Day). When the call came in, the three of us held our breath waiting for the verdict. Yes! I had passed all the testing and "could you please come to the office for 9am on Monday for a face to face interview?" "Well certainly", I said - and I found myself back in Scarborough for another round this morning. Today was a "behavioural interview". Things like, "tell me a time when you really had to work to understand a problem that someone was having and how did you solve it...blah blah blah". Tough. There were two interviewers and I had to take a bilingual test as I had listed on my resume that I was french speaking. The interview took about an hour and at the end I asked when I would hear if I was a successful candidate. The interviewer told me that I would hear from HR later in the week.

I got home at 11am, and at 12:21pm, I got a call from the Manager of Human Resources??? (is that right, Craig?), informing me that they would like to offer me a position at the Call Centre. I was thrilled. The hours were perfect and allowed me to continue with my current job, without any problems. One hitch - "Training starts tomorrow". I almost had a heart attack. How do you organize your family etc in such a short period of time? I explained that I had been under the impression that there was a training date set for January and that I was better suited for that start date. I was informed that she was not aware of a January start and that this was the job that was available. What to do. What to do. So, I took a deep breath and asked for the training hours. To my surprise, they were from 4-11pm five days a week until February 6 and then my regular part time hours after that. Well, that was perfect! No having to worry about the kids in the morning and only a little work having to be done to get the afternoons organized. Thankfully a good friend offered to take and pick up the boys if I needed it. I was so happy to be able to ask only for the afternoon drop offs.

SO...

I start tomorrow! Eeek! I can't believe it! It has gone so fast. I spent the afternoon and evening getting organized, getting the busing schedule (actually, Craig did that), organizing with Deniese for the drop offs on Spanish nights, getting minutes into their cell phones, explaining to the bus driver that he would have two more come Wednesday, making an 'after school checklist', and talking to them about all the major changes that were going to happen. Starting tomorrow. Nothing like dropping a bomb on them. They were great, as they have been through this whole thing and now I think we're ready.

Craig is the one that this is really going to get hit hard. He is just the best. I am blessed. He will be coming home, doing suppers (which I am going to try and have prepped each day), homework, bedtime, etc. After this I will willingly push him out the door so he can play football all day Saturday and Sunday. He will deserve it! I know that this is just what families do, but there aren't too many women that can count on their husband the way I can.

OK - enough about all of that. What else have we been up to? No bowling last weekend, but Kaedo played soccer at 6pm on Saturday. It was painful. The kids were tired and it was a lloooonnnngggg hour. We had a movie night (Hancock - OK but not great) and slept in on Sunday. Got a chance to spend the afternoon with Deniese and that was about it.

This week we have no bowling again, but Kaedo plays soccer and Craig is helping a friend move. Sunday I think we will decorate our tree. We have brought everything up but the furniture needs to be moved and Craig has to set up and 'fluff' the tree.

Today was the first snow pants night for the kids. Pitch dark out and they are with the neighbors jumping in the snow and having a hoot. Here is a picture I snapped of them just as they were coming in. They were just having a great time. Love it!

Well, keep your fingers crossed for me - here's hoping all goes well. It is a new chapter for me. For us. I will be actually working with other people, not just talking to myself in my office. Changes, they are a comin'.

To my niece and nephews - your Christmas presents are in the mail. I sent them today - make your mom and dad let you open them early. Does that make sense???
Hope everyone is well.
later,
s
Had to throw in this picture of the dog - hilarious. Poor bugger!

Wednesday 3 December 2008

is it just me?

...or does it look like Tom Cruise's arms are unhinged? Kinda creepy. It sort of looks like his arms have been photoshopped in but going the wrong way. Also, he looks like he could be Katie's brother, not her husband.
OK, that's it. Just had to put this out there. Weird!

some stuff I've been working on...

Created these layouts as part of the design team assignments for a local scrapbooking store. So much fun to use other product and create something that I know will eventually make it into my own personal scrapbooks. Being on the design team is great because it forces me to create projects every month that have nothing to do with my regular gig. The owners of the store, Scrapbook Academy, give me lots of options to choose from and allow me to create whatever I am in the mood to create. It is a great "job", and I'm having lots of fun with it.

Our version of the Advent Calendar

Today we started our Advent Calendar. I made this one last year and it is stuck to the fridge with magnets. In years past I haven't been able to get chocolate calendars for the boys as they haven't been peanut free. This year, however, I have seen some peanut free ones. I haven't told the boys as I have put too much time and energy into building this one to not use it.
They were excited this morning when they came into the kitchen for breakfast and found the boxes on the fridge. It was cool. Since Ernie won't be joining us this year, I wanted them to have this to help get into the season.

Thursday 27 November 2008

Follow your dreams, they know the way.
Let your own story come out.
Put something in the world that wasn't there before.
Dare to be your best.
Reach beyond your grasp, and surround yourself with people who believe you can.
Redefine the impossible and know that the best is yet to be.
Life is the grand adventure and any life worth living is worth recording.
I have no idea who wrote it, just that it's worth passing on.

party central

faces are blurred to protect the innocent

Yesterday we had Sterling's birthday party. Yes, I know, I said 10 was the last party. Guess not. Sterling, Kaeden , N and S got together to celebrate. We started the day with Madagascar 2, followed that up with a game of bowling and ended up with a late lunch at McDonald's. We were under the impression that S had never been to the movies, but were told yesterday that he had recently seen wall E. What we did learn was that he had never been bowling. He really enjoyed it. I think they all had fun. They seemed to.
